Titus 3:5 ( KJV ) ⁵Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

It does not have "voice" like a verb or participle. Unfortunately, the KJV (and several other translations) render this noun as an English participle (washing) which makes it appear as though action is being described. It is not. It is better to translate the Greek noun as an English noun. "Not from deeds of righteousness that we did, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the bath of rebirth and renovation of the Holy Spirit." When translated more precisely, it is much easier to see that the word "bath" is NOT a metaphor, but is meant literally, and refers to baptism. Compare to John 3:3,5.
