Hello!!
I was wondering what you all think about (or have studied) in regards to the practice known as 'chrismation' i.e. the anointing with oil to confer the Holy Spirit on a baptized individual. I know Eastern Orthodoxy practices this (and I would guess the Romanists as well). My understanding is that they take this practice from some of the accounts in Acts where the laying on of hands was present, etc etc, and the ancient practice of anointing people (and certain things and places) with oil to sanctify/consecrate. I believe Eastern Orthodoxy teaches that sins are washed away in the water, but that the Spirit does not come to the person until chrismation. What do you all make of this? And, what do you make of the statements from Tertullian as he seems to hold to that view?
I don't see this chrismation practice in the pages of the new testament; I don't see it within the great commission nor with the doctrinal teachings of the apostles---therefore, it is highly suspect. I am wondering what led to the early practice this and the continued practice with some churches.
If they say this confers the Holy Spirit on someone, clearly this is a major issue and point of contention.
Thanks for the help!
