For instance, I think Jesus was using hyperbole when He said, if you have the faith... you can move a mountain... I believe the mountain only symbolizes and is not to be taken literally. any thoughts? Brian

So i guess the definite means to answer these questions is to ask a Jew of the first century. Since that is not possible we need to look at other writings by Jews around the same time or popular Jewish literature of the time like Mishnah.
